If your goal is to increase your website's profile in
the search engines and on the internet generally,
you will want to use a combination of improving your
on site optimisation (looking at keyword density and
title optimisation, etc.) while at the same time
increasing your link popularity. In my experience you
have a lot more control of the latter, since the
search engines are constantly changing their
algorithms regarding on site issues but link
popularity will always give your site a boost in the
rankings. And the good news is, you can increase your
link popularity for free. Just be prepared to put some
time and effort into this campaign.
I would probably start by signing up with a free blog
service like blogger and start blogging about your
main site. This will give you some backlinks for free
since every time that you blog a new page is created
which will link to your principal dot com site.
But there are many more free blog services besides
blogger that you can do this with, such as blogeasy,
blogtiger and blogurple, just to name a few. And the
best part is, all these free blog hosts are on
different servers, which seems to be important to the
engines. In addition, you can control the content of
the blogs and ensure that they are relevent to your
sites content, so that you will be creating a network
of SEO-friendly links to your website which will
appear in a very natural, random fashion in the eyes
of the search engine robots.
Likewise, you can also sign up with a free website hosting service such as webspawner
and create similiar content pages that point to your site in much the same way
as the blogging method. Again, you just sign up for a free account, logging and upload your pages that have your articles, and embed your links within the content.
It is best if you can upload several pages so as to create a sort of a themed 'mini-site'.
If you run out of your own articles you can obtain fresh ones based on your sites subject matter from the free article directories.
These are free reprint articles so make sure to also link to the author via the resource box. That way you both win. Like with the free blogs,
you will have a created a network of themed links from different servers across the internet, and this is bound to look good to the major search engines.
And don't neglect directories when it comes to building up your link popularity.
In addition to premium pay directories such as 1 Global Directory
there is a large number of free directories out there which can help you to
build up your backlink count as well. Make sure to submit to the right category
so as to maximise their relevence. Just type in 'free directories' or 'add url'
on your favorite search engine and many results will pop up. Finally, don't forget
signature links on forums and message boards as well as byline links in
free reprint articles. If you take advantage of all the free resources that the internet provides,
you can dramatically improve your link popularity in a relatively short period of time.
