The University of Minnesota Amplatz Childrens Hospital has just announced the implementation of online remote connections and online conferencing solutions. This includes online conferencing equipment implemented in 21 rooms in the fourth fifth and sixth floor of the hospital and three mobile units for doctors and patients to use in the hospital.
According to Jason Albrecht child family life specialist and pediatric palliative care coordinator families of hospitalized children are not always able to be at their sides. Some children remain in the hospital for long periods of time and some parents live many miles away including out of the country. The desired result of the new video conference systems is to lessen emotional suffering caused by that separation
The implemented remote conference systems also seek to allow doctors and nurses to communicate with the patients parents who cannot be present at the hospital. Another idea is of connecting their patients to their schools thus allowing them to attend lessons.
Long term separation from school and peers adds another layer of stress to patients hospitalized for extended periods stated Jason Albrecht We will soon have the ability to loan affordable video conferencing equipment to schools that do not yet have this capability in order to connect patients with their class rooms
But there are other applications for the online conferencing system like allowing parents and children to communicate when both of them are patients or when a parent is donating a an organ to his children enabling them to be together though they re not in the same room. It will also be used in the development of several telemedicine services that are being developed.
As remote access solutions are finding their way into our daily lives it is only normal that more and more applications for them are being found. Web and video conferencing solution such as RHUB 6-in-1 appliance connects people and shortens distances saving time and increasing productivity. What the University of Minnesota Amplatz Childrens Hospital is doing is only taking advantage of the enormous potential that online conferencing systems have to offer.
