A business trip can be one of the most stressful activities that you have to engage in when it comes to your job.
Having to lug around your personal and official belongings can prove to be a hassle, especially if there are several legs to your trip.
Yet it doesn't have to be so! Knowing how to go about packing will take a load off your back.
I have gone on more business trips than I can count and I would like to share with you what I have learned along the way. If I could sum up these "lessons" in one sentence, it would be this:
Know what to pack, where to pack your things in, and the best way how to pack them!
In other words, do not give in to the temptation of bringing too much stuff. Neither should you take just any bag with you - choose efficient and effective luggage. Last, arrange clothing so it will not be wrinkled. Believe me, this mantra has spared me a lot of headaches.
For the Women
1. Pack Your Microfiber Clothes.
This material makes packing as easy as can be. Clothes made of microfiber do not wrinkle even if you roll them up in a tiny suitcase. Also remember, you only really need these: a dress, a skirt, slacks, and a jacket. Black works best because it's simple and goes with anything. You can accessorize and mix these pieces of clothing to suit any occasion.
2. Take Along Minimal Make-up, Accessories and Shoes.
This means pack just 1 lipstick and no more than 2 pairs of shoes. Choose the lightest shoes you have and never bring along something that you can't afford to lose.
3. Pack all your toiletries in one small waterproof bag.
Purchase travel sized toiletries like toothpaste and deodorant so that they will fit in a small bag (and pass through security!).
For the Men
1. Pack Clothes That Can Be Interchangeable.
You really only need a couple of pairs of slacks and several matching shirts. Again, you can come up with different combinations, making it look like you have an extensive wardrobe.
2. Cover Suits with a Garment Bag.
When packing your suits, cover them with a garment bag, this will further help reduce wrinkling. Put them in the suitcase first and then let the excess material drape over the sides. Then put the rest of your clothing in the middle of the bag and cover everything with the rest of your suits.
3. Do you really need your laptop?
If your trip is going to be filled up with meetings, you probably won't. Check first if you really need it and if not, then leave it at home. Lugging this piece of electronic gadget will only pose some security problems, not to mention an addition to your luggage.
Packing light is really not that hard. You just have to know what you absolutely have to take with you and what you can afford to leave behind. To make it even easier, make a list before you pack, when you are not rushed, so that you will take time to think things through.
Here's to a hassle-free business trip!
