Travel: Holy Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Since ancient time pilgrims have been visiting Kailash Mansarovar, the holy Mount Kailsah has always been the source of inspiration and belief for many religions. Although it is located at high altitude of around 19000 feet and the route to Mt Kailash is also very difficult, yet people want to be there at least once in their lives.

The yatra to this sacred pilgrimage had been stopped between 1959 to 1980. But in 1981 it was started again and the people are allowed to pass through this region.

About Mount Kailash:

Mount Kailash is a holy peak nestled in the Gangdise mountains of Himalayas in Tibet. Also known as the pillar of the world it is located along the source of several longest rivers in Asia like Indus river, Brahamputra river, Satluj river, Karnali river etc.

Besides it is recognized as the sacred site of four main religions - Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Bonpo. In Hinduism Mount Kailash is called as the holy abode of Hindu Lord Shiva. It is located at a majestic height of 6,740 meter near the Mansarovar lake. According to beliefs Lord Shiva resides on the top of this holy mountain (Mt Kailash) with her consort Goddess Parvati.

As per the holy book ''Vishnu Purana'' the four faces of the mountain are made of crystal, ruby, gold and lapis lazuli. It is located at the heart of six mountain ranges which resembles like lotus.

Myths and Beliefs:

Every year numerous devotees go for Kailsah Mansarovar yatra. Devotees of different religions believe that circumambulating (Parikrama) the Mount Kailash on foot brings bright fortune.

The total circumference of Mount Kailash is 52 km. The pilgrims of Hindus and Buddhist circumambulate in clockwise direction while the pilgrims of Jain and Bonpo circumambulate in anticlockwise direction.

Essentials of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra:

There are certain requirements before you make for the holy Kailash Mansarovar yatra:

1) First of all the pilgrims need to report at the reception of Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi after their application is cleared.
2) Passport with at least 6 months validity beyond the date of return is required.
3) A certified medical report for trekking at high altitudes is required.
4) Charges of Yatra: A demand draft of Rs 2,000 payable at Delhi in favour of Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) is required before arrival at MEA. Then one more DD of Rs 6,000 is to be given once you arrive at MEA. Finally Rs 200 will be given to MEA as Chinese visa fee.
5) As Kailash Mansarovar is situated at the height of 16,000 to 19,500 feet, so don't forget to carry enough woolen clothes and wind cheater to beat the harsh cold winds.
