Travel: Holiday vs. Teaching Abroad

(Wed May 25th, 2011, by i-to-i TEFL)

So, you want to travel and explore the world.  When most people travel, they book their flight, choose a hotel, and head off on their ‘vacation'.  A vacation that lasts, usually, a maximum of two weeks.  Going to a resort has become the norm for many people.  They spend a lot of time lounging on a beach, by a pool, shopping – don't get me wrong, I love the beach and I adore shopping, but it gets quite boring after awhile!  And when you're at a resort, you usually meet and interact with other foreigners.  That's not really the point of traveling, is it?

If you teach English abroad, your vacation turns into a deeper, life-changing experience and can stretch from a few days or weeks into months or even years!  You can immerse yourself into a whole new culture, meet new people, make friends, learn a language – in other words, experience a new country in a truly authentic way.

Meet New People

Living and working in a new country is a fantastic way to meet people who you wouldn't normally meet back at home. When you're teaching English abroad, you'll find it easy to make friends with the locals, who'll be able to give you a tour of the local area and show you all the cool places to go that are usually unknown to tourists and holiday makers. You'll be introduced to loads of new people at your school, fellow teachers, expats and even your students!

Learn a New Language

Your mind wants to be challenged and learning a new language is the perfect way to do it! By learning the local language of your new adopted country you can really make your life easier out there, even if that's just a few basic phrases. When you're are constantly surrounded by people who speak the language, you'll be able to pick up the language a lot easier than teaching yourself it out of a book. Plus, it's always going to look good on your CV/resume.

Culture and Customs

You can learn about a whole new country's culture and its customs.  Enlighten yourself!  Learn how the locals do it; you may be horrified, astounded or delighted by what you experience!  You could discover some new traditions that you really enjoy and want to incorporate into your own life.

Get Paid

You can do all this – while making money!  How great is that?  It's like you're making money to have fun and make a difference!  Once you've completed your TEFL (teaching English to speakers of other languages) course, you can find paid work all over the world!

Help People

Instead of going on a vacation to be sheltered in a self-indulgent resort – which can be fun for a few days, but really not much longer – a TEFL certificate opens doors for you to really do something meaningful and help others.

With TEFL, you can interact with the locals and you can actually become a local!  And you can help others with your knowledge and make a difference.  It's a rewarding experience for your students and you!
