Fly fishing is a specialist approach to fishing. It is different from bait casting or spin casting because fly fishing uses a weighted line to carry the nearly weightless bait forward when casting. Traditional fishing tackle is designed to have a nearly weightless line carried by weighted bait on the end. Because of this important difference, fly fishing has its own fishing tackle and terminology.

Fishing rods are extremely important for all types of sport fishing. This also applies to fly fishing. It has in recent years been produced an incredible number of good quality fly fishing rods, designed for sport fishermen. Prices on these fishing rods range from fifty dollars to more than a thousand dollars. In my opinion there is no point in buying the most expensive rod when you have never tried fly fishing before. As newbie, you will not recognize a big difference between the rods, so buying an inexpensive fishing tackle would probably be preferable.

Fly fishing rods are made out of fiberglass or graphite. Each of these has its benefits. The fiberglass rod can be used by both experts and beginners during various conditions. It is a durable material which can generally cope with wearing better than those made of graphite. The graphite rods are more expensive than those made of fiberglass. Lightweight graphite rods are generally more accurate when casting. It is also important to determine the flexibility of a fly fishing rod, as the different levels of flexibility make a difference when casting and also when reeling in your catch. Flexibility means that fly fishing rods have different action (the rod bends different under load).

Fly fishing reels have the most simplistic of all fishing reel designs. These fishing reels consist of a drum-like spool with a hole in it to feed the line through. When choosing your fishing reel, make sure that it complies with the rest of your fly fishing tackle. Fly fishing reels are labeled with recommendations for which line class you should use. Remember that these reels are manufactured for left and right handed fly fishermen. Left handed fishermen reel with their right hand and vice versa.

Fly fishing lines are matched to the weight specified on your fly fishing rod and they are a relatively thicker than normal monofilament lines. These lines consist of an inner dacron core coated with a smooth vinyl plastic cover. Depending on the circumstances lighter lines are used with lighter rods to cast smaller flies, whilst heavier weight lines are used with heavier rods to cast heavier flies.

is the act of hunting for fish, using an artificial fly as bait in order to catch it. With modern technological advancement, there is constantly an increasing number of fishing flies available for fishermen. As you may already know, the purpose of the fly is to imitate a bug, which is what most fishes normally eat. They have to act as a normal insect would, or the fish will not react at all. The fish are extremely sensitive to anything that moves around them. What exactly is being fished for and under what conditions you are fly fishing, determines the type of fly you should use.
