Well, you decided to start skiing. There's ten's of questions you ask yourself. What it will be like? What do I need to buy? Am I scared, will I broke my leg? First here are some myths:
"I'm afraid of heights. I won't like skiing."
During your first ski lessons it's impossible that you'll be on any slope steeper than the average golf terrain; as a matter of fact, lots of first-time-skiers slopes are just that in the spring-summer time. Ski needs just a slight slope to start moving so don't be afraid of heights, you'll definitely won't start your courses on Kitzbuehel World cup downhill slope.
"I'm afraid of chairlifts"
You'll start your courses in "total beginners" area so the first lifts you'll use, will be there. Usually there isn't any real chairlift, but just a simple rope tow, button lift, drag lift or a "moving carpet". These lifts run very slowly along the ground, that's why they're very easy to mount and dismount from. So don't be afraid to fall off, even if you do, you won't get hurt :)
Although all big Ski resorts have expensive lift passes which include all terrains in "ski resort" you won't need such a ticket as a beginner. Before you buy a lift pass, take advice from your ski school, they are the ones who will recommend the areas you're likely to access and therefore suggest which ticket to buy. Later on, if you're ready to go step further, you can easily buy an upgrade to your existing pass on a day-to-day basis.
Equipment
As a beginner you really shouldn't buy ski equipment for your first time on snow, it's much easier and cheaper to rent it! Majority of ski-rent shops, rents new skis every year, so don't worry about standards, they're high. Be very careful when trying ski boots, take all the time in the world to find proper ones.
Skis shouldn't be longer than chin height. Don't rent expert-skiers equipment cause it can just harm you. A softer skis and boots will not only be much easier to learn in, the will also enable you to progress faster. Tell the personnel in rent-shop what experience you have and they'll find the right equipment for you.
