It is possible to obtain these information when the balloon is on vertical ascent in the atmosphere or when it is in some motion while reaching maximum altitude. Now a day, the information is gathered by other many devices including these weather balloons. These weather balloons are filled with Helium which is less dense than the air and hence the weather is inflated with this. The ceiling balloons which are smaller than weather balloons are used fro determining base height above ground levels to clouds during day time. The main principle behind this ceiling balloons are the known ascent rate and how long the balloon rises until it disappears into the cloud. It is possible to calculate this by the ascent rate times which will give the cloud's ceiling height from ground level. Usually the ceiling measures about 76mm x 40 cm diameters. As the clouds base is not always flat and solid, its not decided when the weather balloon disappear it's when the colour of the balloon started fading up. It may be possible for the observer to get some false ceiling or poor visibility though the weather balloon is safe, reliable and simple wet snow and rain may slow down the ascent of weather balloon. In order to measure the cloud's height from ground, pilot balloons are also used. This works similar to the ceiling balloons.

The Sounding balloons which features radiosonde which is the small expendable measuring device is also used similar to weather balloons and also carries the instruments like aloft to send back information about atmospheric pressure, humidity, temperature in the atmosphere. This global positioning system which is the satellite based is thus used to know more information about wind. A flexible latex material is carried by Sounding balloon. This unit is hanged at the lower end of string and it is called as radiosonde. With this radiosonde, different parameters can be determined like ozone concentration. Though helium is used to fill these balloons, hydrogen is generally used. Since hydrogen is available at less cost it is used.

Generally weather balloons go to the altitude of 40km that is limited by diminishing pressure causing balloon to expand to the degree until it disintegrates. At this time, above this altitude sounding rockets are used. In order to go to a higher altitude, satellites are used after using the sounding rockets. The weather balloons defined as unidentified flying object and are used even for cluster ballooning.
