Social Issues: Liar,Liar

(Sun Jan 24th, 2010, by Abby)

Mar Roxas was lying through his teeth when he said in the GMA vice presidential debate Isang Tanong that his family and that of Noynoy Aquino had fully complied with the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Law (CARP).

To this day, Mar’s family maintains vast landholdings in Capiz, which would not be the case if it had truly followed the CARP Law in redistributing to lowly farmers the hectares upon hectares of land it had acquired during the Spanish times.

But just go to any farm owned by Mar’s family and you will see the dehumanizing condition of the sakadas (farm-hands) there, who live a hand-to-mouth existence while their masters eat steak and get rich off the fat of the land. And Mar Roxas is promising to deliver us from poverty?

In Isang Tanong, it took a simple question from Loren Legarda to elicit the lie Mar and Noynoy have been parroting. Reminding us of her superb journalistic background, Loren asked Mar if he and Noynoy can truly say to the Filipino people that their families had not exploited every loophole of the CARP.

In the case of Noynoy, how can Mar say that the Aquinos had followed the spirit and intent of CARP when the family had even used its stooge in then Labor Secretary Pat Sto. Tomas to order the shooting in cold blood of protesting farmers at the Aquino’s Hacienda Luisita.

There is a footage out there, which we hope would be uploaded into YouTube, showing the dastardly massacre of Hacienda Luisita farmers, including the fatal shooting of a child who was just retrieving his slippers when gunned down.

The groups behind Noynoy Aqiuno and Mar Roxas dare claim that an Aquino presidency would have a strong anti-corruption platform, would augur well for the economy and would bring about peace in the countryside. The premise is that Noynoy would not do anything to tarnish the image of his parents Ninoy and Cory.

This line of reasoning is absurd because it was not like our country achieved utopia under the Cory presidency, which had become infamous with the Mendiola massacre, a precursor of the Hacienda Luisita massacre, but only on a much bigger scale.

Have we easily forgotten how farmers, who were merely exercising their constitutional right for peaceably assemble for redress of grievance, were shot like chickens by policemen under a paranoid Aquino administration.

Do we want more of that? Do we want another weak president who would just embolden military adventurist to launch coup upon coup? Do we want more of the economic lethargy that had been the hallmark of the Aquino presidency?

Of course not!
