The novel "Fiela's Child" contains several conflicts, which the main character had to face during his life and adventures. The first conflict is leaving everything that he knew behind. It is very hard to leave everything that is very valuable to a person. In so early age he had to struggle against those laws that wanted to separate him from his family. So, the strength of his character was seen from the very childhood, when he was taken away from his family.
The second major conflict is finding his true identity. Firstly he was known as Benjamin Komoetie, than life turned him to become Lukas van Rooyen. Finally he was left with no idea of who he was, as it was impossible to be the son of black woman and impossible to fall in love with his sister. All his life he devoted to searching for his identity and realization of his belonging. Finally, he made up his mind to name himself as Fiela's son, Benjamin Komoetie. During all his life he was living with the thought of his former family, but realized that it was impossible to move back.
The main theme of the novel is power of love, which conquers everything. All the events and decisions of the story were based on love. Practically every action is made up upon love. Firstly, he was adopted by the black family, as hey loved him as native son. When Benjamin was taken away from Fiela, she tried to do her best to turn back her child; she addressed the magistrate, trying to get her son back home. Fiela had great love for children and it would break her heart to leave a small crying child near the door. Further the love line continued in depicting love of Benjamin to his sister Nina.
