As the race to the White House in '08 heats up, more Republican and Democrat candidates than ever before have become frontrunners for their respective nominations. The Right has the usual "white male" candidates that have been the United States' standard for presidents, while for the first time, the Left has two really viable differentiations for their nomination: a black male and a white female.
Hilary Clinton is leading the polls for Democratic presidential candidate, with Barack Obama in second place about 15-25% behind her. Hilary Clinton may be leading because of her experience in the White House as First Lady to President Bill Clinton from 1992 to 2000.
Bill Clinton and Hilary Clinton were, in some ways, a team at the White House. Unlike most First Ladies who oftentimes steer clear of the political spotlight, Hilary Clinton often expressed her opinions about the state of affairs in America, such as with the lack of a national health care plan.
Hilary Clinton tried to pass a Clinton health care plan in 1994 to offer universal health care so that everyone, no matter their income or job, could afford to see the doctor when they were sick. It did not pass, but Bill Clinton and Hilary Clinton were instrumental in starting the SCHIP (State Children's Health Insurance Program) that has helped many parents be able to afford health care for their children.
Bill Clinton and Hilary Clinton's time in the White House also included the Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997 to help make adoption of foster care children with special needs easier for their new families. Bill Clinton and Hilary Clinton also oversaw one of the biggest reductions in national debt in years--which has been negated in the subsequent years of the Bush presidency and hundreds of billions of dollars spent on the Iraq War.
Bill Clinton and Hilary Clinton's interest in the political state of our country did not end with Bill Clinton's presidency. Hilary Clinton is the first former First Lady to serve as a senator. As the Junior Senator of New York for the past seven years, Hilary Clinton initially supported the Bush administration but has vehemently protested against the Iraq War in recent years.
Bill Clinton has gone on to do charity work with his William J. Clinton Foundation and other humanitarian causes. Bill Clinton's Foundation has supported the HIV and AIDS initiative to combat the disease as well as plans to put an end to global problems such as poverty, hunger, and ethnic conflict.
If Hilary Clinton wins the Democratic nomination, she and Bill Clinton are sure to continue their humanitarian and health care reform work while back in the White House. The first female president of the United States could usher in a return of the powerhouse political couple that led this country to relative prosperity in the 1990s: Bill Clinton and Hilary Clinton!
