Self Help: How to Help Ourselves in Earthquakes

(Wed May 18th, 2011, by jwcassie40)

An big earthquake may cause collapsed buildings, fires, plagues and a large number of casualties.  Those who stay alive through disasters know how to protect their lives through quick evacuation. Though an earthquake is unavoided and uncontrolled, its destruction can be limited to a minimum as long as we master some self help and rescue skills.

Calm down

It's found that many people's death during an earthquake is caused by sudden mental breakdown, not by housing crashes. In despair of survival, they yell madly and "kill" themselves in extreme fear. It is because yelling can accelerate metabolism, increase oxygen consumption and cut down physical strength and tolerance; meanwhile, lots of smoke will be inhaled into bodies easily, which may cause breath choking and lead to unnecessary casualties. What we should do in harsh conditions is to keep calm and find ways for rescue.

First aid to injuries

Generally, bleeding and crush injuries are very common in an earthquake. The first step to deal with bleeding is to lift injured limbs and call for help. For open fractures, we should not reset bones on the spot in order to prevent tissues getting injured again. Just cover the fractured wound with clean cloth and make a simple fixation operation. As different parts have different fixation requirements, make right choice for benefits of further treatment.

To handle crush injuries, we should try to remove pressing items on the victims first. If someone is wounded in many parts, we should keep the wounds clean and dress them with clean gauze. Sent them to hospitals in time if they are infected with tetanus or aerosis. For those who have serious trauma, have them drink glucose water to prevent shocks.

Prevent related disasters

An earthquake usually causes many related disasters, and a fire is one of them. When it happens, we should escape away from fire spots as soon as possible, taking off burning clothes, wearing wet clothes or pouring water to the fire. Avoid swatting flames with both hands, or your hands will be burned.

Prevent epidemic diseases

To prevent tetanus and gas gangrene, we can bury bodies as early as possible; pay attention to drink sanitary water and prevent epidemic diseases after natural disasters.

To sum up, some basic protection skills from earthquakes are necessary to learn for all of us so that we can help ourselves in danger. After all, god only help those who help themselves.
