We all have our dumb moments when we wish the ground would open and swallow us up. It's when those happen too often that our thoughts turn to how to stop feeling stupid. Here are some helpful ideas to stop you being stupid as often.
Relax more
Quite often our feeling of being stupid is because we're tense and haven't relaxed. This often comes at times when we're desperately trying to impress someone else and in doing so, we tense up and then do the stupidest things ever invented. Worse, we often see ourselves about to do it and can't stop the process.
Relaxing is a good way to overcome this - it will cut down the tensions that you're feeling and will allow you to be your more natural self rather than a trainee court jester.
Think before you speak
Engaging your brain before you open your mouth is a good way to trap the more stupid things you say. Even a small pause of a second or so can make all the difference. Obviously you don't want to leave long pauses between each and every word - that would just make you sound like a moron - but with practice you should be able to judge what's likely to emerge from your mouth, trap it if it's going to be super-stupid and work on this over time so that you aren't being stupid as often.
Don't take things personally
Most of us have a tendency to take things personally, especially if it's comments from people we trust and admire. So when someone you look up to accuses you of being stupid, it's natural to feel stupid as a result of the comment. Work out whether you can distance yourself from the comment or even turn it into constructive criticism (which it may well be meant as) so that you can turn the comment round to your advantage and in turn stop feeling stupid every single time you don't get something 100% right.
The big thing to realize is that everyone has their moments of being and feeling stupid. You wouldn't be human if you didn't suffer. But you can work on how to stop feeling stupid by working on your mind and on how you react to the situations that cause you to feel less intelligent than usual.
