Self Help: How To Increase Brain Power: 5 Simple Brain Power Boosting Ideas

(Fri Apr 8th, 2011, by Trevor Johnson)

You don't have to be below average intelligence to start thinking about how to increase brain power. We've all got much more power in our brains than we give ourselves credit for, so it's time to start using it!

Memory exercises

These are good if you are always forgetting things - when stuff is always at the tip of your tongue but never seems to make it any further. Mnemonics work well for lots of people when they're trying to improve their memory: make up an acronym that when you use it triggers the words or ideas you're endeavouring to remember. Like every other organ in our body, the more you use your brain like this the better you'll get.

Brain foods

Some foods will enhance our brain, others will dumb it down. As a general rule, if you think it's likely to be bad for you, it probably is. So the usual suspects of alcohol, caffeine, sugar and processed foods fall into the category of bad for your brain, even though caffeine can help boost concentration for short periods of time. And foods that you think of as healthy - fruit and vegetables, brown rice, that kind of thing - is almost always a good way to increase brain power. Not headline news but it sure beats the scare stories and miracle cures in the papers every week.

Get some decent sleep

Sleep is the time our body uses to recharge and repair things. That goes for the brain as well as other parts of the body. If your sleep patterns are being disrupted or you're too stressed to sleep properly, that will be having an adverse impact on your brain power. Take up some form of relaxation, cut out things like television, radio and print news, reduce your caffeine and alcohol intake and you'll start to sleep better which in turn will help increase brain power.

Watch your posture

It's not just your teachers and parents who want you to sit or stand up straight. Our posture is an important influence on our thinking and hence our brain power. Slouch and your whole body will slouch and run down with you. Sit up straight and pay attention and you'll find yourself virtually automatically more alert and with it.

Use brain wave entrainment

Modern science has started to work out a few things about how our brains work. One of those is the frequency levels our brains operate at under different circumstances. Brain wave entrainment gives you the short cut you need to be able to put this into practice in real time, not in months, years or decades. It's a great way to increase brain power.
