Self Help: How To Be More Extroverted If You're An Introvert

(Sun Apr 24th, 2011, by Trevor Johnson)

It's easy to be introverted and hide away in your protective shell. Not interacting with people is just so much easier. But there are times when you wonder what it would be like to be more extroverted. A bit like letting your hair down or choosing a different personality when you're on holiday or in a new place where no-one know that you're really an introvert.

Here are some simple tips on how to be more extroverted.

Try it in a supportive area

If you've got a few friends who you can trust then play act at being extroverted. Make up a reasonably believable excuse or even just be honest and say that you think it's about time that you didn't lock yourself away all the time.

Try it somewhere you'll be anonymous

It's often easier to be more extroverted when you're not in company that knows you inside out. This could be on holiday, on a work trip or even just a drive to a nearby town. Then take a deep breath or two. And be more extrovert without being over the top. So don't act like some cheap actor who's hamming it up. Be yourself but be more of yourself.

Speak up

Chances are that your introvert nature goes with being quiet or - when you do speak - speaking quietly, almost as a whisper. Practice projecting your voice so that you're louder than that local mouse you're trying to impersonate. And while you're at it, let the people around you know what you're thinking occasionally rather than keeping those thoughts to yourself, rattling around your mind rather than as voice waves rattling around the room.

Play to your strengths

Even the biggest introverts get asked questions from time to time. Sure, your first instinct may be to clam up (or run away) or put yourself down. Use the questions to show that you do know what you're talking about and use the good feeling that comes over you at that stage to fill yourself with pride and self esteem. Visualize yourself glowing from the inside out - and not the usual blushing shade of red either.

Chip away at your introvert nature

Small incremental change is a good way to be more extroverted over a period of time. Rather than a sudden change - which runs the risk of being rejected by your mind - make small adjustments over a period of several weeks or even months. You'll find that this is probably the easiest answer to the question of how to be more extroverted - give it a try!
