Self Help: How Should We Define Wealth and Success

(Tue Apr 26th, 2011, by Sharon R Chen)

Many people are pursuing wealth and success but few people can really achieve that. However, when we are pursuing wealth and success, we should first think about the definitions of them. That is what are wealth and success.

Some people think that wealth and success mean money and reputation. However, this is not true. Wealth and success is full of articles, tips, and advice on achieving financial success through internet sales, marketing, and business. Do you want to work from home, using the internet and make thousands of dollars a month? We'll show you how to automate everything, so your business will be open and you can be spending more time with your family, vacationing, or growing your business even bigger.

Wealth does not merely mean money. For the sake of argument, let us say that your resources presently amount to a leather bag containing a hundred unmarked silver coins. Interestingly enough, by the "what would you like to do" measure, you are fantastically more wealthy than any given ancestor put in the same position of ownership. You have immensely greater choice. Clearly there is more to wealth-as-choice than present property. We must also consider the historical investment made into increasing choice, and into lowering the cost of specific - usually popular - choices. The engines of technology and open, free markets are turned by people to create new, better, cheaper choices.

To some extent, success means reputation, but success also includes other things. For example, most people tend to equate success with money. That is, the more money you make, the more successful you are. But under this definition one could argue that a drug dealer who makes millions of dollars annually is a very successful person. I don't agree with this. I could give you that such drug dealer is a savvy businessman, but I wouldn't call him successful, because the impact he has on the life of other people is actually a very negative one. The same thing could be said about online spammers, scammers and so on.

The definitions of wealth and success are complicated and fuzzy. But we should first know why we pursue them before action.
