1. Get more exercise
Exercise is important to keep our bodies fit and healthy. And if our bodies are generally healthy, our brains will follow suit. Exercising releases a chemical called endorphins into our bodies which is the body's natural "feel good" drug.
2. Use your brain
Yup. Self evident really but if you let your brain lie dormant for most of the day, it's not going to help you increase your brain power. It's like any part of the body - exercise it and you'll get improvement. So do a crossword or a Sudoku or whatever else takes your fancy. But do some exercise for your mind!
3. Eat healthily
Or at the very least cut down on the junk food. Your diet plays a large part in how your brain reacts. So read the label on the food you're eating, get to know the umpteen ways that food manufacturers pretend something that's really sugar isn't sugar. Generally be at least a bit more careful about what you eat. And if that's not possible, at the very least take a decent vitamin pill to compensate.
4. More Mozart, less Eminem
Classical music, especially Mozart, has been shown time and time again to boost our creativity and other brain capabilities. Sure, Mozart may not be your "scene" currently but dig out a track on YouTube and play it in the background every now and then.
5. Cut the alcohol
That old chestnut again. In moderation (like most things) alcohol probably isn't too bad. The trouble is that moderation and alcohol don't go hand in hand. Especially when you've had a couple of drinks. Give your brain cells a chance and at least reduce your alcohol consumption.
6. Have a good night's sleep
Our bodies need time to rest and recover. Our brains are no different. They need time to process what's happened during the day - some of this manifests itself in dreams - and getting a good night's sleep is an excellent way to allow this to happen.
7. Do something new
There's nothing like learning something new to cause your brain to kick into gear. Pick something new and give it a go. If you like it, keep with it. If not, pick something else. This will help to increase your brain power as keeping your brain active is one of the best ways to do this.
