Come from a position of power!!!
This is one of the first philosophies that I learned when I started my sales career many years ago. Now that I'm coaching, I have clients who are in the sales industry or who are just getting into the sales industry that tell me they're either in a slump or they don't know how to go about sales.
When I hear this from a client I can't help but remember back when I fist started in sales. I didn't know what to do or how to go about it. Then I quickly fast forward a little and remember my first sales slump. Although going through it in the moment didn't feel particularly great, I look back at it now with fond memories because of the one thing that I learned that helped me get back on track. And considering that hindsight is 100%, that sales slump was a turning point for me and it's one of the greatest moments in my professional career.
Though my professional life is now dedicated to helping others reach their goals, there is still a sales aspect to it naturally, that's business. But the lesson that I learned back then, I apply now and of course I don't land every client but I do land clients and customers frequently and more important consistently and I never get frustrated or second doubt my abilities.
When I went into that first sales slump, I learned the true meaning of "coming from a position of power" really meant. I coach people in the network marketing industry who believe that coming from a position of power is...
· Showing how complex their business is because the more complex it appears to be the higher class the business must be
· Acting as if they don't need your business which shows confidence
· Acting rude or aloof because many people associate "ruthlessness" with "successful business person"
· Hard selling and pressuring at all cost to again show the value of their time
During that slumps I was acting like I was the end all and be all of sales. And when that didn't work I worked on my voice tone, my speech pacing, trying different rapport building techniques. What I eventually learned to do is to go back to my basics. Why not? Your basics is what brought you to the dance to begin with so doesn't it make sense to use what got you to that level or got you into the game in the first place?
To come from a position of power, of course there are certain things that there is no substitute for like confidence, in your business and yourself. Intelligence is another quality one must have to succeed. But all of those obvious and standard qualities out of the way you simply need to do this...
Get their story, why are they interested in your service or product
Let them know about the benefits and the features of your service and product
Tie in the benefits and features of your product or service based on their specific needs.
Be sincere about their enjoyment or success where it's related to your potential business with one another.
Being in a sales slump or just getting started in sales when you have no prior experience is a scary thing and is a touchy situation. Although, I do believe that there is a place in the sales world for all the techniques that we're exposed to everyday, don't complicate even more an already complicated matter. Go back to your basics as often as you can especially if you're in a bind!!!
