SE Optimization: Local Marketing

(Sun Jan 24th, 2010, by Tikee Pittman)

If you are a small business owner, then you know how tough it can be out there. In a downturned economy, the first to go are those small businesses. This is for many reasons. For one, they may not be able to afford to offer prices as low as some of their big box competitors. Their client base could be too small or not especially loyal.

Because of these problems, small business owners have a special challenge that is vastly different from their large business counterparts. Small business owners need to be on top of their game with their marketing strategies, to continually bring a stream of new clients to their businesses. A small business thrives not only on the loyalty of their existing customers, but new ones as well.

Many small business owners may wonder how local internet marketing will benefit them. After all, isn't internet marketing only for large national businesses? The answer is, of course not! Even if you only cater to a small area, your business can benefit from a menu of local marketing strategies. Even though marketing strategies that are used typically for local marketing are geared towards mass international demographics, the internet is an important tool to bringing local clients to your business.

Think about it; what are the traditional methods of marketing in a local area? Of course, there are the old standby marketing tactics. Things like phonebook ads or the Yellow Pages, flyers or billboards to place around your target area in order to drum up your business. The problem is, in limiting yourself to these few tactics, you're missing out on a large portion of clients who simply cannot find you. Society has changed the way that it searches for information and finds companies. Most searching happens online, the highway of information that most potential customers use while looking for goods and services.

When you decide to not use local internet marketing, you're missing out on key targets that would make great customers and ultimately help you to grow your business. You miss out on the stay at home mom who'll never see the billboard, and the working professional who no longer uses the phone book. These types of people rely on the internet in order to get their information.
