Real Estate: Keeping Your Homes Safe

(Thu Dec 3rd, 2009, by Katrina)

Your homes are the only place that you can be just yourself. No matter what kind of home it is, any person would normally take off their guards and just loosen himself or herself. This is why a home is without a doubt a sanctuary. You can have your peace in mind in here and most of all; feel comfortable to do whatever you plan to do.

All of these are possible because most people know that a home is the safest place to be. However, someone or something an always break this belief. With so many hazards and threats to society, safety can be breached.

Threats to Safety

There are various threats to safety. Number one threat is other humans.  It’s all over the news. People are being attacked in their own homes by burglars, rapists and murderers. Bad people can be threat to anyone. But this will all depend on the location of your homes.

Other threats to safety can be internal. A home's structure and anything around it can cause injury. This goes the same for the various types of solutions, insecticides, gases, fuel and chemicals that can be poisonous or allergic when improperly handled. Some of these things can even cause residential fires like improperly storing fuel or leaking gas pipes.

Keeping Home Safe

Certain things can be beyond your control. How other people behave is not something you can manipulate. So if you want to keep your homes safe against bad people, you have no choice but to protect yourself against them.

You can successfully protect yourself from perpetrators if you create layers of security in your homes. You must have some kind of security from the exteriors of your homes unto your interiors.

Your first layer of protection can be a well-lit lawn. You can also install security cameras if you can afford them. Bushes or grasses should be cut short. Second layer of protection can be your lock. Windows and doors should be equipped with high quality locks so you can secure the place when everybody is asleep at night or when nobody is at home. Your last layer can be alarm systems.

When it comes to home structures and components, home safety can be achieved by doing the following things:

1. Repair all damaged structures.

2. Properly store cleaning agents and other chemicals.

3. Check leaks from gas pipes and have them fixed.

4. Maintain good indoor air quality by having good ventilation.

5. Install smoke alarms and have fire-fighting equipment ready.

6. Replace old appliances and frayed wires.

7. Apply safety precautions at home.

8. Prepare first aid kits and store them in accessible places.

9. Practice fire prevention techniques.

Bear in mind that to bring safety at home, you do not have to shell out tons of money. Although having a sophisticated security system can help a lot but you can still bring safety simply by doing practical things.

Keeping homes safe can be achieved in many ways. Prevention always works. So start from there. After that, train everyone in your household so that they will become disciplined.  Practice emergency preparedness and know what to do during a crisis.
