After choosing the breed you want, purchase day old turkeys or poults in the spring, as they are affordable and easy to begin with. You should also set up a brooding area, which is supplied with one large food and water container per twenty-five birds. A good game bird food will have about thirty percent protein.

Your next step is to create an 8 by 8 foot area to raise the turkeys for approximately four more weeks. Once the turkeys are six weeks old, you can take them outdoors to take dirt baths and to flap their wings freely. After two more weeks, you can let your turkeys roam freely in pasture but make sure that fresh food and water is available. Remember that an average adult will eat about one pound of feed a day.

Again, the meat of turkey is generally considered healthier than that of other animals. It is perhaps for this reason that raising turkeys for meat is such a popular activity nowadays.
