Pets: Pet Insurance for the Saluki

(Fri Apr 29th, 2011, by Brent)

Salukis originated in the Middle East. They were used for coursing hares, foxes and gazelles. Funny, because they actually resemble gazelles in their sleek look and fast feet. Presumably, that is what made them great hunters of the animals. Middle Easterners considered Salukis the only clean dog. Normally, dogs were not allowed to sleep in tents or receive attention. Salukis were the exception to the rule and got to enjoy both of those luxuries. They were also not allowed to breed with any dog that wasn't another purebred Saluki. The Middle Easterners wanted the breed to remain pure. These dogs came to America after World War I.

Today these dogs make great family companions. They are sensitive, reserved, and gentle. They are good with children, but are not very playful, so children may become bored with them. They are aloof with strangers, but not aggressive, and independent enough that they may not come when called. Like a Greyhound, they are very quiet and calm while indoors despite their size. But they love to run and chase when outdoors.

A few of the pet health issues they struggle with include hemangiosarcoma and heart problems. Hemangiosarcoma is a rare and often fatal form of cancer. It occurs in the form of a tumor that is often found on the heart of spleen. Unfortunately, it is difficult to diagnose and often pets struggle with the condition for a long time before it is caught. Heart problems include a vast range of conditions and afflictions of the heart, including heart failure, irregular heartbeats, and congenital heart defects. Treatment is dependent on the type of heart condition, as determined by a veterinarian.

Both of these health conditions are serious and expensive to treat. This is where pet insurance comes into play. Pet insurance can help pet owners make medical decisions based on what is the right form of treatment for the pet, not what option is the cheapest.

Salukis have feathered or smooth coats that can come in a variety of colors. They need warm and soft bedding to remain comfortable at night and need a long walk or short run daily to maintain their exercise needs. They live to be between twelve and fourteen years old.
