Not surprisingly considering its name, the Japanese Chin dog breed originated in Japan. This dog was bred for the distinctive job of being a lap dog and companion animal, many times for highbrow aristocrats. They were so revered that they were often given as gifts from one noble family to another. That is actually how they made their way to England; they were given as a gift to Queen Victoria. Eventually they made their way to America as well and were one of the first breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club in the late 1800s.
These dogs still take their job of ‘companion' seriously today, as they are incredibly devoted to their families, tending to follow them around like a tiny little shadow. They are also very playful and willing to please, making them a fun companion for training as well. Only positive training strategies should be used with this breed (and any breed!) because they are quite small and sensitive.
This dog breed is not a good guard dog, as they get along well with everyone, even strangers. They are friendly and fun-loving, and are known to greet anyone with happiness and gusto.
Like all dogs, they need exercise during the day, but they require less than bigger, more active breeds. A short walk or game of fetch in the yard every day should suffice.
They do have a long, silky coat that requires combing twice weekly and Japanese Chin owners should expect to pay for professional grooming sessions a few times a year. Another thing to note as far as cost of these dogs is the cost of veterinary treatment. These dogs are prone to patellar luxation, dry eye, entropion, and cataracts, all of which can cost a lot of money to treat. Pet insurance is a good option for many pet owners who want to decrease veterinary cost for catastrophic accidents and illnesses.
Dogs in this breed stand between eight and eleven inches tall and weigh between four and seven pounds. Their coat can be black and white, red and white, or black and tan. They live to be between twelve and fourteen years old.
