Pets: Learning to House Train Older Dogs

(Thu May 19th, 2011, by Michelle Bivens)

Learning to House Train Older Dogs -  That is the key factor of this house training your dog article.  Lack of housetraining is a common reason that pet owners relinquish a dog or banish them to the backyard,  Housetraining is a straightforward process as long as you understand that your dog is like a toddler without a diaper and needs to trained appropriately.

When housetraining, be patient and consistent and most importantly, set your dog up for success

Supervision and consistency are the keys to housetraining success.

Housebreaking and paper training are not difficult to teach your dog but they require consistency and patience.  Some people encounter problems when housetraining their dog because they don't understand what's fully involved.  Once a problem becomes evident, the owner either continuously disciplines the dog (which just confuses the dog)

Always decide in advance what training method you will apply and reassess them continually as training progresses.

One of the fundamentals of housetraining is a designated potty spot- a place where your puppy knows he should go and relieve himself.  And it that spot is easy to use and easy to clean, the training will be easier for you to use.

An eating schedule is extremely important when house training dogs.  Remember, dogs are like kids, they need structure.  Keeping them on an eating and drinking schedule helps to regulate their bathroom schedule (which makes it easier for you know when the dog needs to go to the bathroom and getting him to where he needs to be.

When you first take your dog home, give him a few minutes in your yard to attend to his bilogical needs, praising them when they have done well.  From this point on, until your dog gets the hang of it.  Take the dog consistently outside about 10 to 15 minutes after he eats.  Leave him out there for around 15 minutes   (during this time, he should wish to relieve himself)  Always praise him in a very proud voice.  Always remember that your tone of voice is essential key element when praising and teaching a dog
