How to teach a dog tricks
Teaching your dog new tricks can be difficult at times exspecially when they can be set in their ways. I should know I have a strong minded yorkshire terrier but I have taught her several tricks in the past 2 years. First and for most get small treats or something you can break into small pieces (I use begging strips).
The first and easiest trick is one that they do on thier own and that is sit. When your dog sits say sit and reward with a treat do this until your dogs associates the word with the action. After your dog learns to sit you can move onto down you may have to put your dog into the down position before they understand what you want just besure to treat after each lesson until again they associate the word with the action.
The one trick that was the hardest to teach was rollover. To teach the rollover trick they must be in the down position from there you will need to push them gentally to one side they will complete the motion at the same time say the command repeat until you do not need to assist by pushing them over.
Teaching shake or paw is fairly easy all you have to do is have your dog go into the sit position. When they are in the sit position take one of their paws into your hand and say either paw or shake and reward with a treat. Again repeat until they associate the word with the action. Eventually you will be able to place out your hand and say the command and they will follow through. You actually can get a few tricks out of this one trick. If you put out your hand and take it back with the command of wave they will be able to wave hello and goodbye to your guest at your command.
