There are many types of lubricant available, all with their own different twist. Lube comes in many shapes and sizes from a simple foil like a condom, squeeze bottles and pumps, to huge litre containers. There are mainly two types of sex lube available, silicone and water based. Silicone lubricants are generally more expensive than water based lubes but one tends to use a little less and it lasts a little longer.
Water based lubricants such as ID Glide are as the name suggests, water based. Water based lube is readily available in many stores and is the most popular type of lubricant available. There are flavours available such as "Wild Cherry" and "Passion Fruit" which are safe for oral sex and various colours and some even have silk appearance. There are warming and tingling types to try and water based lubes clean off and out of the body easily and quickly. Water based lubes are safe to use with any condoms and any toys.
Silicone lubricants never dry out as they contain no water. They can be a little more expensive but you tend to use less. To clean off the skin a good scrub with soap and water will remove it. Silicone lubricant will not be absorbed in the skin. Silicone lubricant can't be used with condoms and should never be used with silicone toys.
Not all types or brands of lube will suit all people; the fun with lube is finding the right one that suits you. Most people use water based because they are more easily and readily available. Most supermarkets in the UK now sell water based lube in their stores, generally next to the condoms and other sexual health products. Silicone lubricant is generally mail order only unless you go to an adult store. Try to give a silicone based lube a try you may like it. Just because it's not so easily available doesn't mean it's not fun!
When you get comfy using a lube it can really help to intensify and enhance sexual sensations, if on your own, as a couple or group. It makes sex feel different and introduces new pleasures and feelings. Sexual performance can be extended, and sex can be safer when using a condom as there is less chance the condom will split. Using a lube can help eliminate vaginal dryness and make your sexual encounter much more pleasurable and eliminate pain. Using a lube sometimes is essential especially when using toys or during anal play and just plain fun for vaginal, masturbation or partner sex!
Some people can get a reaction from some types of lube but keep going until you find one which suits you, it's worth the wait. Research over the years has proved that some people can have some side effects from using lubes.
Most water based lubricants contain glycerine, so people who are prone to yeast infections should avoid water based lube, unless you use a glycerine free product. There is no conclusive scientific evidence to prove this but it would appear to be common.
Some people are allergic to some things so check the contents of a lubricant before you buy. Some lubricants contain paraben which is a preservative, but this can cause allergic reactions. Some concerns about long term use of paraben's were raised a few years ago. If this concerns you then try a paraben free lube.
If you are planning or trying to have a baby, it’s probably best to avoid using lube. Most lube can be harmful to sperm but don't try to use lube as a contraceptive just in case!
The flavoured, warming and tingling lubes can occasionally cause issues with some people, but for a majority they add some real fun, feelings and taste!
