San Jose man arrested in Sunnyvale stabbing death
20-year-old Victor Knox-Martinez was arrested Friday night in San Jose by the Sunnyvale police in connection with the murder of 27-year-old Rolando Mendoza in the parking lot of a Sunnyvale apartment complex. Knox-Martinez's arrest culminated a multi-agency investigation that involved officers from the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety and San Jose and Mountain View police departments. This led to officers on Friday evening going to a home in the 1400 block of East San Antonio Street in San Jose where they believed Knox-Martinez was staying. He fled on foot and several officers were called to search the area. The Sunnyvale investigator made contact with Knox-Martinez by cell phone and urged him to surrender. He was located several blocks away at East St. James and 31st streets and was arrested on a no-bail warrant and taken to Santa Clara County Jail. Sunnyvale Public Safety Lt. Dave Pitts called the stabbing a gang-related crime, although Mendoza was not a gang member. "It looked like a case of mistaken identity. He was at the wrong place at the wrong time." Mendoza was visiting a friend at the Sunnyvale complex when Knox-Martinez approached him, believing he was a rival gang member.
