Metaphysical: Humility

(Wed Sep 19th, 2007, by Moriah Marston)

God forbid I should get too big for my britches! Fearful of the blinding effect of ego inflation, I bow to humility as the ultimate antidote for grandiosity. To make any spiritual progress at all we must conquer the impulse to puff up with self-importance. It helps to remember that we are nothing more than mere grains of sand in the macrocosm.  Humility is the key to an expanded consciousness.

Humility neutralizes untempered pride and self-aggrandizement. It softens us by releasing the rigid certainty of excessive self-assurance. Humility reflects our awareness of the mystery and reclaims our innocence. Humility allows us to say: "I don't know." "I need help." "I'm lost." "I'm afraid, overwhelmed, sad." "I surrender." "We're all equal." "I'm only an instrument of the Divine." "I love you." "I'm sorry." "Thank you." True humility is acceptance of all that is, without judgment. It reminds us that we're not in charge. Humility allows us to gratefully embrace and honor the Divine Plan as we relinquish our personal agenda to a Higher Order. It reminds us of our place in the Universe. Humility, the conduit for surrender, enables us to give up when our smugness dissolves into helplessness and we can only yield to the great River of Life that carries us forward, regardless of resistance and blindness.

So, how do we become humble? Outmoded torturous practices of purification, self-criticism, supposedly promoted humility. But suffering can't be the only way to break down the ego in order to taste the sweet nectar of humility. Self-torment used to ward off inflation does nothing more than harden us in a struggle with self-judgment.

False humility is the opposite of grandiosity. Fearful of getting too carried away with ourselves, we try to be humble by dimming our light and downplaying our gifts, power, achievement, wisdom. Ironically this only waters down the potency of our being. We deny our birthright of brilliance because we don't trust ourselves to carry this spiritual heritage unpretentiously. Humility demonstrates that no one is better than anyone else.  Everyone is equal in Source's eyes -- all bright stars in this Universe. So why should we be ashamed of our magnificence? There's no need to feel guilty when we dare to shine.

Humility is not a rationalization for under extension. True humility doesn't require self-abasement. Self-diminishment only expresses fear of being big--not humility. Ironically, the acceptance of one's magnitude is an expression of humility--the acknowledgment of our greatness without attaching self-importance to it. Humility allows us to display this largeness as an invitation to others to also reveal their excellence -- as a statement of ordinariness in a Universe overflowing with miracles. If everyone were humble enough to allow their amplitude to fearlessly flow through them, our world would be filled with Olympic athletes unafraid to go the distance into possibility--from a place of commonality, mutual respect and reverence.

How do we practice humility? The first step is to release our impulse to hide in humiliation/shame. Then we can examine the ego and notice its areas of strong identification--where we are carried away with ourselves. To claim our significance is not meant to make us more special, and therefore set apart from others. To walk the razor's edge of humbly embracing our tremendousness, we must remember that what truly makes us amazing beings lies way beyond the realm of the ego. The ego's self-importance based on accomplishments blinds us to the truth that all achievements simply pass through us, propelled by a larger vibration.  We are only agents of the Divine Plan, ambassadors of the soul. All great experiences flow from our connection to the Higher Planes--nothing to get puffed up about on the ego level.

The need to be more than others, in competition, only reveals the deep insecurity that painfully blocks humility. Once we appreciate the ego as a tool for self-identification and nothing more, we can release the ego's need to be important and humbly yield to our Higher Self. Only through humility can we access this Higher Self and embrace our eminence. There's no need to fear the humble display of this greatness because we're not taking ego credit for our illustriousness. This makes life a lot easier. We can humbly bask in gratitude for our birthright of magnitude without having to shoulder the illusion that we have to conjure up superbness on our own.

Humility, the path of least resistance, eases our journey and makes everything possible. It holds us close to the bedrock of our human condition. The more grounded we are, the more Light we can anchor. It prevents a plummeting from ego-assumed heights. The need to be a big shot makes for a terrible fall from grace. Humility is the gateway to grace.

Humility keeps us porous and open to life's flow. Pride hardens, humility softens.  The ultimate gateway to freedom opens when we accept that we don't have to be anything other than who we are. We're relieved of the bloat of inflated self-expectations, liberated from the prison of assumptions.

Humility, the great equalizer, levels the playing field. If all countries released their national pride and coexisted in a state of true humility, our planet would know peace at long last. Without the need to impress each other, one-upmanship, under the illusion of  being lesser or more, we would joyfully embrace the new paradigm of collective awakening through the sacred communion of all.

Free from fanfare, the Tibetan approaches me in his usual brown robes, emanating an unassuming gentle strength that avows his humble dedication to the implementation of the Divine Plan on planet earth. He teaches:

"Unencumbered by the ego's blind spots, humility is the purest expression of spirit flowing through the human condition. Central to humanity's innate essence, it naturally uncovers the cellular memory of one's divine heritage. Master Jesus' teaching, "The meek shall inherit the earth." describes the inevitable spiritual boon inherent in true humility. To swell with self importance instantly separates and isolates one from the human family. Rather than glorifying self to be above the rich webbed foundation that holds the human psyche in Source's loving hands, humility carries the energy of CONNECTION because it opens and makes self available to all that is."

"Humility breaks attachment to the past, because all arrogance and condescension are relative to former identities and accomplishments. The duality of superiority/inferiority generates a wall of judgment that blocks many opportunities. Humility, well beyond this limiting polarity, opens the door to infinite possibilities."

"Often students are given karmic assignments that seem beneath them. These apparent curve balls are necessary to develop an aspect of their soul on its journey into wholeness. Smug assumptions that self is more advanced and therefore should not have to yield to these requirements block the humility that lubricates these endeavors with undefended compliance. Then, ironically, the student "lowers" their place in the overall scheme of things through an unwillingness to develop through the dictates of the Divine Plan. Evolution is made possible by the humility to cooperate with greater Forces and the willingness to trust the Prodigious Wisdom that unfolds the path. Expectations of what "should be" hurt the soul, cloud the 3rd eye vision and block the understanding/intuition of the crown chakra."

"Whether self has the stature of a king/queen or the position of a servant, true humility elevates the soul to a level where all walks of life converge regardless of life circumstance. Humility provides elasticity to the personality/ego and joyful adaptation to changing levels of status. Humility embodies the archetype of the Divine Servant who's only agenda is to serve the soul and who accepts this mission in deep gratitude for the opportunity to play an unpretentious part in the evolution of the Universe."

"Humility softens and circumvents the lower mind. This allows self to approach life's riddles from a starting point of modest not-knowing--the only avenue to wisdom/insight.  When the mind is filled with assumptions, expectations and pat answers, its hubris clogs the pipeline to original thought and expanded awareness. The Masters are most inclined to work with students who are humble enough to ask for help, receive instruction and diligently apply themselves free from the frustration inherent in assuming they should be further along the path or be receiving more spiritual goodies/rewards. These assumptions must be released through humbling acceptance of one's place on the path."

"Humility is a sign of maturity, wisdom, gratitude and readiness for extensive transformation. Practice humility by laughing at oneself, being unconditionally devoted to the needs of the soul, embracing life assignments with a thankful cooperativeness that aligns the personal will with the Divine Will, basking in the mutuality of all beings, serving others from an opened, softened heart overflowing with spiritual generosity and taking time to stop and bathe in the awe and wonder of the Divine Child within. In deep humility the Masters offer profound gratitude for the opportunity to teach humankind about the wonders of the Universe and the promise of enlightenment for all."
