Sexual dreams are not about sex exclusively. Our sexual dreams are not always about sex, but they are always about passion, and are worthy of our attention. Sexual dreams are full of meaning and often not at all sexual, but most people are embarrassed to talk about them. On the other hand sexual dreams are also seen as perfectly normal and frequently involve sex with people who we would never consider as sexual partners in waking life. They also can be often straightforward representations of desires for other people. For men, about 44% of the sexual dreams are positive expressions of sex, but only 34% of women found the sex in sexual dreams positive in nature. Most often, however, openly sexual dreams are said not to be accompanied by orgasm in either sex.
Sexual dreams are normal and they run the gamut from thrilling to shocking and everything in between. Sexual dreams can leave you with a tingling charge--or with a haunting sense of unease. Sexual intercourse was the theme in 53% of the sexual dreams of men. About 36% of women dreamt about sexual intercourse during sexual dreams. In about 40% of sexual dreams men dreamt about sexual propositions compared with 27% of women. In 4% of sexual dreams men and women "experience" orgasms. However, only women -- in about 4% of their sexual dreams -- remember their partner having an orgasm.
Dreams that involve acts of sexual experimentation or erotic emotions usually involve people known to you and may reveal something about your feelings for that person. If you dream about your lover doing the nasty with another person, you could have deep-rooted concerns about your sexual performance or interaction with that person. Ditto for dreams about lovers' sexual organs. Visions of others' genitalia dancing through your head may also suggest you may be worried about their sexuality or other personal issues. These dreams are relatively common and don't mean that you are a sexual deviant.
Psychologists claim to have found clear meanings for common themes in sexual dreams. Dreams involving bisexual or hermaphrodite roles could indicate issues with feelings about your masculinity or femininity. Freud may have fathered psychological theory regarding dreams and sexuality, but it wasn't put into cultural perspective until the 1950's. In his 1950's landmark studies of sexual behavior, Alfred Kinsey found that two thirds of women and nearly 100% of men reported experiencing overtly sexual dreams.
Dream Fact: In a trend that matches well to studies of sexual 'prime' in men and women, men tend to have sex dreams most frequently between late adolescence and their early twenties. Women's proclivity for sexual dreams actually increases with age until about age 40, where it plateaus, then starts to decline around age 55. This dramatic increase was not attributed to any physiological change in women, rather, it is likely due to more liberal sexual attitudes, general awareness of nocturnal orgasms and more positive feelings about sex dreams. A sexual dream may be about physical pleasure but it may also be about power, control, manipulation, virility, and effectiveness.
Sexual dreams are common and and should not be discouraged from being written about. Sexual dreams are normal and they run the gamut from thrilling to shocking and everything in between. However, sexual dreams are not abnormal, they are just another phase of life. For both men and women, researchers and psychologists agree that, unless sexual dreams are disturbing, you should simply enjoy, if not encourage them. Causes for sexual dreams Psychiatrist claim, that since sex is one of the most powerful of all human drives, it's not surprising that so many dreams have a strong sexual content. As sexual symbols are often present in dreams, it is not impossible that almost all the symbols we encounter could be telling us something about our sex-life. Therefore, it is very important for us to take a look at our attitude towards sex and to recognize the need for sexual fulfilment.
