You don't have to buy Hot Topic to get Emo. Any old rag will do. Perhaps not quite, but t-shirts must certainly look vintage. Op-shops and flea markets are ideal places to find your Emo clothes. Or type Emo into the Ebay search box and see what bargains pop up.

Make sure the t-shirts are really tight, preferably with some ill-defined logo that no one can understand. This gives the illusion of originality. Black is good, but not strictly necessary for Emo. Mix in some neon, or blue and white diagonals. Stripes or checkers are fine. A t-shirt with an Emo band logo is great.

Skinny jeans or leggings in black or navy are the next essential. Girls can wear short skirts or dresses if they are teamed with legwarmers. Belts should be wide and studded, while a dark zip-hoodie is a necessary addition to the Emo wardrobe.

Feet need to be clad in Converse All-Stars - as scruffy as possible, please. Either low-tops or high-tops are okay so long as they are black. Hats? Try an original truckers cap complete with logo. And don't forget those thick-rimmed glasses. You can always pop out the prescription lenses and have plain glass inserted.
