The use of a variety of candle moulds will make all the difference to the interest in your candle range as a candle making home business owner. It is not necessary to have a whole range that is different, but it is possible to create a very interesting display using some different candle shapes in your range.
How to make your candle range interesting
Create a 'story' with your range. If you don't know what a 'story' is, then let me explain.
In a woman's clothing shop for example you may see a display that has various items made from the same fabric. It may incorporate a collarless top, a dress, shirt and a jacket all made from the same material in color and design. This is called a 'story' - the same fabric but different items that may appeal to different customer's needs.
How does a home candle maker create a story?
A story is created by co-ordinating several groupings of candles in the following ways. This is where the use of a variety of candle moulds will make the difference. A candle maker may decide to set up 5 different stories to their candle range:
1. Pink with rose scent 2. Brown with cinnamon scent 4. Cream with vanilla scent 5. Taupe with sandlewood scent 6. Mauve with lavender scent
Then within the five stories there will be various shapes. This is when you decide on the moulds you would use and you might set your story up in this way:
1. 3 x six inch pillar candles 2. 3 x three inch pillar candles 3. 3 x six inch high square candles 4. 3 x three inch high square candles 5. 6 x gel candles in varying glass shapes
This then will mean that each range or 'story' will have 18 candles all in the one color and all with the same candle fragrance. If you did do all 5 color/fragrance ranges then you would 90 candles to your completed range.
It would mean that when you are purchasing your candle moulds to set up your ranges you would have 3 of each shape. Let's assume that the first 15 candles are going to be made with paraffin wax you would have 3 moulds of each shape to pour of the one color.
Keeping costs down initially
To keep costs down when starting out you may not pour the whole story or you may not buy 3 candle moulds for each shape but repour to get the numbers.
As you sell the candles you would replace them with the same color and shape.
As your business grows you will know which are the most popular colors and fragrances for your clientele so you can expand your range in the right direction then. It is important when candle making to take notes on all details of each story so that you know what works and where you might run into problems and so that you can repeat the popular ones.
