Gardening: What Every Do It Yourselfer Needs

(Thu Jul 29th, 2010, by Robert Wallace)

One tool should be in every do-it-yourselfer's toolbox. You won't find it at a hardware store but you will need for almost any project you do. If you haven't guessed already, it is a digital camera.

When handling a project that you haven't done before or haven't done in a while, a digital camera can be your best friend. There is an old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. When it comes to working out of your normal environment, that number may double. Having a picture of what you are repairing or going to repair can be very useful.

Pictures Capture Details
Consider this. When you start to tear something down to repair it, you must remember what it looks like before you tear it down. I don't know about you, but my memory sometimes leaves out details and a picture doesn't forget any detail.

Digital cameras generally have zoom capabilities that let you take a real close look at some of the details that can make or break a repair job. There is another saying, the devil is in the details, which means you better pay a little attention or that old word OOPS will creep in. Who needs that?

Pictures Prevent Mistakes
Thinking ahead will help you, when you go to get parts. Going back and forth to a parts store because you can't find the exact part you need due to model changes waste time and causes frustration.

If you have a picture of what you are doing, it will be easier to narrow down the parts needed. Taking a picture of any identifying symbols, trademarks or serial numbers will keep you from jotting down the wrong numbers by mistake.

Pictures Help Reassemble
When tearing things down to replace broken or worn out parts, pictures will be helpful in re-assembly. Of course, this only helps if you take pictures of each step you make in tearing it down. Once again, you will be able to see any details you may have forgotten.

There is nothing worse than getting something re-assembled only to find out you have parts left over. Then, you have to make a decision. Do you re-do or hope they were not that important?

These are just three ways a digital camera comes in handy for any do-it-yourselfer. Once you start carrying around a digital camera, you will start finding all kinds of ways that the camera comes in handy. Not to mention the sanity you save from having pictures to complete a project.

In this visual world, it pays to have pictures. What better way to provide pictures than a digital camera.
