Gardening: Utilising the Space Under The Stairs

(Mon May 16th, 2011, by Laura Hartson)

The space under the stairs in our old house used to be a place where the computer was housed for communal use, and the rest a dumping ground for school bags, trainers and shoes, and anything else that we could sling in their after school, on our way from the front door to the lounge.

So what should you do to make sure that you are making the most of the space and ensuring your children aren't trashing your home?

If you have an under the stairs cupboard then you could use it as a pantry, to store and foods and jars that don't need to be kept cool. This will free you up a lot of space in the kitchen if it is compact, and enable you to have a one stop place for storage.

You could also use it as a laundry area to house the washing machine and dryer if you can add some ventilation. Store the iron and the ironing board and keep them tucked away for when they are needed.

To add value to your home, and if the space is big enough, then why not turn it into a toilet? It will mean less arguing for the bathroom in the morning, and will add value if you are looking to sell your home in the next five years.

If you have an open space under the stairs, then it will give you a lighter feel to the room, but will also be a space that is a little confused. Try giving it a bit of definition by adding some floor to ceiling shelving and using it for storage for books and DVDs.

If you are limited on space then consider using it as a study area for your children to do their homework. If you have younger children then you could convert it into a play area, and add some cupboards to store the toys so that they don't take over your home!

If you are planning on making any changes in your home then check out your Home Insurance to make sure that you are covered for any damage.
