Gardening: Minimizing Flood Damage In Your Home

(Tue May 10th, 2011, by BillyDRitchie)

Floods can occur anywhere and anytime. It is also the natural disaster that causes a great amount of damage to property and livelihood. That is why it is very important to know how to minimize flood damage at home. Even though your home is not in a flood prone area, there is still a chance that one such disaster will strike your home.

Floods are very expensive natural disasters to deal with. It comes and submerges you home and the next thing you know everything in your home is ruined and destroyed. Just a single calamity and flood damage in a community can reach millions.

There is absolutely no way to prevent a flood and there is also no way to know that a big flood is coming. The only way you can do is prepare for the worst so that flood damage to your home is greatly minimized.

Minimizing flood damage is the key when dealing with flooding as it can easily ruin electrical appliances, water pipes, your home electrical system, and even the floor and walls of your home. To minimize flood damage, if you are still looking for a new home, look for one that is not in a flood prone area or in higher locations. This way your home stands a greater chance of safety. Although this is not a guarantee that your home will not be flooded, but it will keep you dry longer.

You can also minimize flood damage by moving you possessions to a higher location. If you already have a house that gets flooded often, you might want to consider moving all your valuable things to the second floor. Now, if you don't have the additional floor, you might want to have one added. This way you keep your appliances, furniture, and other valuables dry during a flood. This will greatly minimize your flood damage.

Floods can also be a cause of other disasters such as a fire when the water comes into contact with a live electrical system that was not shut down. To minimize further flood damage, you should raise your electrical systems to make sure you do not cause fires. The components of your electrical systems are also vulnerable to water so get them as high up as you can so that flood water cannot easily reach them.

If you are using additional systems for water heating, cooling and ventilation of your home, you can raise these too as these can be easily damaged by a flood.

Your home might have a basement and this is usually one of the first parts of the house that gets flooded. You may want to invest in a sump pump as this can minimize further flood damage because it will prevent the flood waters from rising up.

Movable things such as home appliances and furniture can be moved in an event of a flood and prevent flood damage but you cannot just lift your whole house. Flood damage can also affect the walls and floors of your house. You can use a waterproof coating on the exterior of your house to prevent flood damage to your walls.

These things can greatly minimize the flood damage to your home. It is more expensive to fix everything up after the flood and the damage has been done.
