Gardening: Large Energy Bills

(Tue May 10th, 2011, by Laura Hartson)

The winter this year has been a long and chilly affair, and it seems that now the end is in sight, with temperatures last weekend reaching higher numbers that that of Istanbul or Barcelona. The sun has seen a sell out of disposable barbeques in supermarkets, and sausages and burgers flying off the shelves and people had their first BBQ of the year. But we may not be over that last little hurdle, as the energy bills for that quarter will soon be fluttering through our post boxes.

Around forty percent of annual energy consumption is used in the winter months, and because we all had to turn our heating on unseasonable early last year, we could be feeling the pinch of it this year.

Home Insurance holders pay around one thousand pounds a year for energy, which could mean a whopping bill of around four hundred and fifty pounds pretty soon.

Home owners are encouraged to set up a monthly direct debit so that the money can be taken on a drip feed rather than having to settle a large bill at the end of the quarter.

If you are looking for cheaper bills then shopping around for energy providers is the best idea, as you can check you are on the best plan for your area and living arrangement.

A lot of pensioners are finding that the bills are simply too high for them, and there are a lot of deaths in the cold periods down to people not being able to afford to heat their homes. If your home isn't double glazed then you should think about not using certain rooms if you can, and turning the heating right down in them. Alternatively, use masking tape to tape up the edges of doors and windows that aren't used. This will stop a draft coming through, and mean that the hot air in the house will not escape.

If you own a home in the UK then shop online for a Home Insurance policy to save yourself money that could be best spend on far more fun things!
