Gardening: Fiberglass Boat Plans - Everything You Need To Know

(Sat May 14th, 2011, by Geoff M.)

Fiberglass boat plans are increasing in popularity these days for people who are looking into building their own boat. And with good reasons too, as fiberglass has the inherent properties that makes it a very suitable material for boat building.

Fiberglass is regarded as very durable material. Yet its advantage over aluminum which is a very durable material as well is that it is very lightweight. This property alone makes fiberglass a material of choice for many boat builders.

Furthermore, fiberglass is not as easily vulnerable to temperature and water. It is not prone to rotting which may be a big issue if you build your boat with wood. Although extreme exposure to the sun as well as other harsh elements will degrade a fiberglass, its effect is not as pronounced as those on wood or any other boat building materials. Thus, maintenance of a fiberglass boat is not as troublesome as that of a wooden boat.

One important thing to consider in building your own fiberglass boat is that you have to set a predetermined design for the boat before beginning the construction process. This is because once the hull is put in place, it will be very hard, even futile, to make some changes. You might as well start from the beginning.

That's why for this kind of boat design, major emphasis is given on the fiberglass boat plans you are going to use. Right before you start building, you have to decide on the specific plan and dimension you are going to use. It is a good idea as well to have all the materials and tools ready as this would save you a great deal of time later on in the construction process.

Also, if this happens to be your first time building a boat, you might also want to consider building something simple first until you get the hang of the craft. Fiberglass boat building is not one of the simple methods of building a boat. It may require you to have the help of a boat building software. And if you don't have any prior experience on those, it will be very frustrating for you indeed.

Nevertheless, the choice is ultimately yours to make. I would only strongly suggest that you go over some boat building plans that suits your purposes. As much as possible, you need to choose a fiberglass boat plans that already have the design you want in place. Or if you want to customize it, do so before construction because once some of the parts of the boat are already in place, it may be too late to make changes.

Personally, I have a collection of boat plans I use as my general resource when it comes to boat building. It features a catalog of plans which makes it very suitable for me as I always like to have as many options as possible. Its boat plans also ranges from the easy to implement ones and for beginners to plans which are for more advanced builders.
