When you are designing your backyard pond, you need to give some thought to your water supply. The first thing to consider is the size of your pond. If the pond is going to be small, you can just drag a garden hose over and fill your pond with it. However, if your pond is bigger, or you get tired of dragging the hose around, you may want to install a water line dedicated to your patio pond.
Check with your local building department to determine what permits you will need to obtain. You also need to ask how deep to bury the water line. This depends upon the winter conditions where you live because you don't want your pond water supply line to freeze and burst.
You can connect the pond water supply line to a float valve similar to the float valve in your bathroom commode. Most hardware stores and farm supply stores sell float valve for livestock water tanks. You can hide your float valve behind rocks or plants. I've even used one of those fake rocks to hide the valve under.
You will connect the water supply line to the water faucet. Most people use an old garden hose that they cut to length. You will need to camouflage the supply line to your pond. Personally, I like to use a big fake rock to hide the water faucet along with the electric controls for the pump to circulate the water. These rocks look lifelike, and will keep your water garden looking natural. (You don't find a lot of water faucets in the woods next to a spring.)
If you are going to put Koi or other fish in your pond, you will need to install a filter. If not, there really is no need for one. You can use swimming pool chemicals or just plain laundry bleach to clean up the water in your pond. If you keep the pond water supply circulating, it will cut down on the algae that will build up in your pond. A little bleach every week or so and your patio pond will stay clean.
Connecting a good water supply line to your pond really is pretty simple. The average homeowner can do the work in a single weekend. If you have no experience at all with electrical and plumbing repairs you can hire a landscaper to do the work for you. But have the fun of having a water garden or patio pond is the joy from having constructed it yourself. Especially when your friends are relaxing by your little nature preserve enjoying the peace and tranquility and congratulate you on your handiwork.
