Dandruff is a mild form of seborrheic dermatitis and is evidenced by the itching and flaking of the scalp. It can also affect the ears, eyebrows and forehead.
If this is you case check with your dermatologist because the treatments will be different than for the traditional dandruff discussed here.
What are the causes of dandruff? The primary cause of dandruff is thought to be a yeast called Pityrosporum ovale. Over activity of oil glands is another possible cause.
Stress can trigger or exacerbate dandruff. A high sugar intake may be another major cause. To compensate take a high potency B-complex to relieve the dandruff. Related to the sugar problem is the fact that diabetes may be the cause of your dandruff. If you have diabetes the high sugar levels result in dehydration of the tissues as the body flushes out fluids in an attempt to rid itself of the sugar. One of the end results is dry skin.
Shampooing in hot water may strip out the natural oils and dry out your scalp. Using cool water will close the pores and will relieve the flaking problem. Using a great dandruff shampoo like Redken, Paul Mitchell, or American Crew sells some really great dandruff products.
Your diet such as a low fat diet may be deficient in unsaturated fats called essential fats, such as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.
Blow-drying your hair may dry out the scalp and cause dandruff. Hold your hair dryer at least 10 inches from your scalp and use a great hair drying protector product we recommend checking out www.realsalonproducts.com
