Finance: Tips on Getting Cheaper Maryland Auto Insurance

(Wed May 25th, 2011, by Renee Walker)

With the cost of gas and all other items continuing to rise, getting the best rates on Maryland auto insurance becomes even more crucial.  One may begin to look for rates by first considering how much insurance is needed.  Maryland vehicle owners are required by law to have at least $30,000 and a maximum of $60,000 per accident in bodily liability coverage.  They need the same amount in uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage.  They must have at least $15,000 in both property damage liability and uninsured motorist property damage.  Last, vehicles owners must carry $2500 in personal injury protection.

Since Maryland follows the Tort system, one driver must be found at fault to cover all damages, so it is important to have enough coverage for any situation.  It may also be necessary to get other types of policies such as collision and comprehensive coverage.  After all, not all damage to vehicles comes from multiple car accidents.  An act of nature could cause a heavy object to fall on a windshield or cars can receive some kind of storm damage.

With this in mind, how is it possible to get Maryland auto insurance at cheaper rates?  One way to get a lower premium is to be a safe driver.  Insurance carriers favor drivers with blemish free records or no points on their license, so these drivers are often offered lower rates.  It may also be possible to find a carrier that offers safe or defensive driving courses for their clients so that they may qualify for discounted rates.  This can also help those who are more difficult to insure such as teens or seniors.

Insurance providers also favor safer cars.  Vehicles with antilock brakes, airbags and other safety measures that will result in less damage should an accident occur are likely to qualify owners for lower premiums.  Some carriers may also even offer lower rates to women who have been statistically less likely to end up in accidents and usually are driving slower when they do.  There is less damage to a vehicle that has been travelling slowly than to one in which speeding is involved so this is also less of a risk for the provider.

Cars that are less likely to be stolen are also favored by Maryland auto insurance carriers.  Driving sports cars or luxury cars that frequently show up on the Forbes list of cars most attractive to thieves are less attractive to insurance carriers, so they get higher rates for their owners.  Living in an area that is relatively low in crime will also result in a lower premium.  Cars equipped with antitheft measures such as car alarms and locking steering wheels are also better prospects for lower rates.
