Finance: Single Mother's Financial Help

(Wed May 25th, 2011, by Steve Gink)

Being a single mom is a difficult thing to deal with. At times, you will really be in dire need of financial assistance, so preparation for tough times especially when money is involved and needed is truly essential. Planning ahead of time will be useful, also when planning you must consider your job circumstances, everyday expenses, educational expenditures and such. If possible, you have to have part-time jobs to support your family further. Luckily though, the government and various organizations has seen the struggles of single moms and made some programs to provide their help to single mothers who are not financially capable. Some of these programs include scholarships, housing loans, cash awards and business grants. Thus, as a single mother you need to know what these programs are and check out the government agencies who might be able to help you. Government institutions such as the Chamber of Commerce, TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), WIC (Women, Infants and Children) and even the YWCA (Young Women's Christian Assosiciation). The above-stated government agencies  are specially adept towards assisting single mothers with their needs.

Financial support for single moms:
Grants
- Grants are like awards that given to single moms who are in desperate need of financial help, unlike loans, you do not have to pay back the money lent to you or you do not need to do community services or work for it. To get these grants, the help providers require the applicant to go through screening processes to see if the applicant is worthy of the grant that she wishes to apply to.

How to find out if you are qualified?

Just because you are a single mom does not necessarily mean that you are qualified to have these grants. Those single mothers whose earnings are below a certain level are considered as low-earning individuals and are qualified to have these special benefits. To find out if you are qualified for the grants you have to fill up an application form which would require you to describe your situation and your economic background, these forms are available at your local welfare office. Remember, each program has its own income level limits. Whether you qualify for the income limits or not depends on your type of income, expenses or any other conditions that you and your family may have.

What to do if you are not qualified for the benefits?

So, okay you are not qualified to have the benefits. Need not to worry. There are other programs that are offered by the U.S. government especially for single mothers. To have these types of benefits, you have to do or perform some of the services or tasks required by the grant terms. There are approximately 900 programs that are offered by 26 federal grant-making agencies. Some grants fall under the categories of agriculture, art and education. You can also visit http://www.grants.gov/ and http://www.neh.gov/ for further information and details on grant applications.
