Environment: What Is Acai and Why Is It So Popular?

(Thu Sep 10th, 2009, by cheryl jack)

Acai is one of many types of palm trees that grow in South and Central America. In times past, the tree was used predominantly for its leaves and hearts of palm. The berry isn’t actually a berry at all but a drupe. A drupe is a fruit that has a large seed covered by a pulpy layer, similar to a date. In the past few years the popularity of the acai fruit has increased exponentially. Often cited as some sort of miracle cure for ailments ranging from cancer to fertility, it seems that nothing is too difficult for this little fruit to treat. As with any other poorly backed claims, you, as the consumer, must evaluate the claims rationally. Research on the acai has shown that it is high in a number of very powerful antioxidants. Full of flavinoids and anthrocyanins, the fruit certainly packs a healthy punch. The benefits of the antioxidants are also used in the form of oil in cosmetic applications. No research has shown that acai is better than any other fruit, per se, in treating anything, but it is acknowledged that the fruit is very healthy and can be a positive part of a good diet. From the nutritional perspective the fruits are high in unsaturated fats as well as fiber, vitamin A, and a laundry list of amino acids. The benefits of antioxidants and flavinoids are still uncertain, but it's believed that they may help fight the effects of aging and possibly cancerous changes in cells. Freeze-dried berries maintain their nutritional properties better over time. Unfortunately, as in the case of other "wonder" food fads, the acai has suffered from a number of scams. Disreputable dealers have offered trial samples and then used the information gained to make charges on credit cards without authorization. If you do purchase acai online, be very careful to use only legitimate dealers.
