Environment: Osteoporosis Best Ayurveda Treatments

(Mon Sep 6th, 2010, by Dr Kranthi R Vardhan)

Normal bone is composed of protein, collagen, and calcium all of which give bone its strength. Bones that are affected by osteoporosis can break (fracture) with relatively minor injury that normally would not cause a bone fracture. The fracture can be either in the form of cracking (as in a hip fracture), or collapsing (as in a compression fracture of the vertebrae of the spine). The spine, hips, and wrists are common areas of bone fractures from osteoporosis, although osteoporosis-related fractures can also occur in almost any skeletal bone.

The osteoporosis condition can be present without any symptoms for decades, because osteoporosis doesn't cause symptoms unless bone fractures. Some osteoporosis fractures may escape detection until years later.

A fracture that occurs during the course of normal activity is called a Minimal Trauma Fracture or Stress Fracture. Hip fractures typically occur as a result of a fall. With osteoporosis, hip fractures can occur as a result of trivial accidents.

Osteoporosis bone fractures are responsible for considerable pain, decreased quality of life, lost workdays, and disability. Estrogen is important in maintaining bone density in women. When estrogen levels drop after menopause, bone loss accelerates. Accelerated bone loss after menopause is a major cause of osteoporosis in women.

Factors that will increase the risk of developing Osteoporosis are:

Female gender; Caucasian or Asian race; Thin and small body frames; Family history of osteoporosis; Cigarette smoking; Excessive alcohol consumption; Lack of exercise; Diet low in calcium; Poor nutrition and poor general health; Mal absorption; Low estrogen levels (such as occur in menopause or with early surgical removal of both ovaries); Chemotherapy can cause early menopause due to its toxic effects on the ovaries; Amenorrhea (loss of the menstrual period) in young women also causes low estrogen and osteoporosis; Chronic inflammation, due to diseases (such as rheumatoid arthritis and chronic liver diseases); Immobility; Hyperthyroidism; Hyper parathyroidism

A routine x-ray can reveal osteoporosis of the bone, which appears much thinner and lighter than normal bones. Unfortunately, by the time x-rays can detect osteoporosis, at least 30% of the bone has already been lost. In addition, x-rays are not accurate indicators of bone density. Bone Densitometry can give accurate results for the diagnosis of Osteoporosis.

From Ayurvedic perspective any Vata imbalance or disease pattern in the body is indicated by in one of the symptoms such as stress, anxiety, constipation, dry skin, hypertension, restlessness, insomnia, PMS or many menstrual disorders, Irritable bowl syndrome and Inability to relax etc.

Some of the behavioural patterns that can create a Vata imbalance in the body are: being in stress or reacting to stress with anxiety; physical exhaustion; mental strain and overwork without giving body a chance to relax and recreate; addictive patterns; lack of sleep; suffering emotionally from grief, fear or shock; travelling (flying or long car journeys); stringent diets; eating cold, raw or dry foods frequently; living in a cold, dry and windy weather.

Osteoporosis is one of the natural processes that occur with age, however, Vata body type individuals or people in Vata stage of life, are likely to experience loss of bone density at a higher rate. Consequently risk for osteoporosis will be higher in a person of Vata body, old people and women after menopausal age. For women, a regular menstrual cycle is important for building and maintaining bone strength throughout a woman's reproductive years.

Ayurveda also focuses on balancing doshas, especially Vata, and the dhatus are free of ama, then the body's homeostatic mechanisms will more efficiently help our metabolism adjust to natural aging process. When the body's natural healing ability is strengthened, and root imbalances in basic bodily functions are removed, the bone rebuilding process will be positively influenced.Ayurveda recommends on:

"Rasayana Therapy", involves correcting the Imbalance, a Diet rich in phyto-oestrogens, Calcium etc and Researched Internal Medications and Internal Detoxification to eliminate Toxins in the system. For this Ayurveda Panchakarma & Rejuvenation Procedures are carried out:
