Environment: ISO Standard to supersede DIN Specifications

(Tue Oct 2nd, 2007, by R Futcher)

The DIN70070 Standard for the final quality of AdBlue (AUS32) solution has now been complimented by the addition of a new DIN standard DIN70071.
The new standard has been created as a preliminary measure to support the stringent product quality requirements for AdBlue.

Specific test procedures for the individual quality characteristics in accordance with DIN 70070 have been drawn up by the standardisation committee's working group, simply as since existing methods, (for example for pure urea) cannot be applied to the specific aqueous urea solution used for commercial-vehicle SCR technology. For this purpose the DIN 70071 preliminary standard has been drawn up.

Since commercial vehicles using SCR technology will gradually come into use over large areas of Europe, it is not sufficient to publish national DIN standards. On the contrary, the interest in unified international standards is considerable. A working group from the International Standards Organisation (ISO) is therefore currently drawing up international standards for quality characteristics and test methods that will supersede the above-mentioned DIN standards.

Work on the following projects is also in progress at international standardisation level:

  • Definition of the AdBlue refilling interface
  • Determination of a graphic symbol for the AdBlue tank level display

The ISO standard, which will in the long term replace both DIN70070 and DIN70071 will be ISO22241
The current DIN publications can be obtained from Beuth Verlag GmbH, 10772 Berlin.
