My previous articles on healthy weight loss have discussed the importance of healthy eating without feeling like you're being deprived. In a nutshell, a food diary and a couple of simple and basic Principles are all that is needed to get your weight loss efforts moving in the right direction.
We also discussed the importance of aerobic exercise and it's role in raising your heart rate and helping to stoke the proverbial fat burning furnace. As a refresher, 4 or 5 days a week is what's needed and you don't have to be a track star. If you can only do 5 minutes on your treadmill or exercise bike that's fine. Get your 4 or 5 minutes and next time try adding a minute. This is literally so simple that anyone can do it.
2. Anaerobic
Anaerobic exercise is high intensity activity that you can only do for a short amount of time. An example is weight lifting. You can curl a barbell a few times, but not for a half hour at a time.
This also helps get your heart rate up and provides an additional benefit. Increased strength means increased muscle (ladies don't worry- you don't have the testosterone to develop into a muscle bound beast but you will gain strength) and every ounce of muscle burns calories just existing. In other words, your body needs to burn some of your food in the interest of supporting your muscle.
Lifting weights is a great way to get some anaerobic activity in. You don't have to get fancy with this- use soup can, fill old milk jugs with water and get creative. You don't even need weights- prisoners do exercises in their cells without equipment to stay in shape.
Do a few pushups, some chin-ups some chair dips or whatever you like. If you can't do a pushup, hold yourself in the position as long as you can and lower slowly. Begin by being on your knees if from your toes is too tough.
If you're tough already, try doing some pushups on your knuckles. Do as many as you can and keep a log of these efforts too.
A day a week of Anaerobic exercise and 4 or 5 a week of Aerobic exercise, coupled with my nutritional guidelines article for healthy weight loss will have you making more progress as the results will be noticeable on a daily basis, even just in how you feel.
And remember: the most important aspect of this whole thing is that you have to be happy with yourself. You can't necessarily look like a model, but you can do better than you think. The longest journey begins with the first step.
