Environment: Basic information on Cipro side effects

(Wed May 25th, 2011, by Steve Gink)

Cipro (Ciprofloxacin) is a chemotherapeutic antibiotic of the fluoroquinolone drug class (quinolones refer to potent synthetic chemotherapeutic drugs) which includes levofloxacin (Levaquin), ofloxacin (Floxin), gatifloxacin(Tequin), norfloxacin (Noroxin), moxifloxacin (Avelox), trovafloxacin (Trovan) and others. It fights bacteria in the body. It kills bacteria by interfering with the enzymes that cause DNA to rewind after being copied, which stops synthesis of DNA and of protein. Ciprofloxacin is used to treat infections of the skin, lungs, airways, bones, and joints caused by susceptible bacteria. Cipro is also used to treat various bacterial infections. The FDA approved of the use of Ciprofloxacin in October 1987. It can only be taken with proper prescription from a medical specialist. However, just like any other prescription drugs, Cipro also has its own side effects. Interactions with other drugs

Ciprofloxacin taken together theophylline can lead to increased toxic blood level of theophylline. Theophylline is used to open airways in the treatment of asthma, if the toxic levels of theophylline go higher it can cause seizures and disturbances in the heart rhythm. If the use of theophylline and ciprofloxacin can not be avoided, make sure to always visit your doctor for blood tests to monitor the toxic levels of theophylline.

Ciprofloxacin may lead to elevated blood thinning effects of warfarin (Coumadin). Anticoagulant activity should be monitored after starting or stopping ciprofloxacin.

Sevelamer (Renagel) may reduce the effects of ciprofloxacin. Iron salts (ferrous sulfate) and antacids may reduce the absorption of ciprofloxacin. Milk and orange juice can also reduce the absorption of ciprofloxacin. Ciprofloxacin as well as iron and antacids should be given 2 hours before or 6 hours after taking milk or orange juice.
