Environment: ADHD Students – Getting Lost Academically Is A Big Problem

(Fri May 20th, 2011, by Rob D. Hawkins)

If you are one of the over 10 million ADHD students out there you may feel like you are running an uphill race of about 100 yards and giving your competition a 30 yard head start every time. It's not that you can't win the race but in order to do so you will either have to be a much faster runner or put in a lot more training than those non-ADHD individuals you are competing against.

One of the biggest problems ADHD students face is getting lost academically. As you may know failure to focus on topics of little interest is an immense problem for most ADHD students and with academic success being more about a series of puzzle pieces or assignments being put together over time, rather than about over achieving on one individual assignment the chances are pretty good that somewhere in a semester those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder will enter an area of study that is doomed to failure.

When this occurs those student with this condition will simply not be able to muster up the determination to successful slug through. On the other hand if there is someone there (tutor, fellow classmate, concerned teacher, or parent) who recognizes the problem and is willing to go the extra mile to help the ADHD student stay focused through this challenging period then the chances are pretty good success will eventually be found.

On the other hand if attention deficit hyperactivity disorder has yet to be identified as a problem, or no one is there to give a helping hand, then what may initially seem like small academic concern can balloon into all sorts of problems including academic under achievement, quitting school, violence, depression, social ineptness, lack of motivation in other areas, and loss of self esteem.

Just asking ADHD students to do better likely will not be enough due to the origins of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder itself. Most agree this common mental health concern is a biological condition of the brain driven by the brain neurotransmitter chemical dopamine (and possibly norepinephrine). In other words ADHD is a biological imbalance of the brain chemicals which causes inattention, inability to focus, impulsivity, organizational problems, erratic behavior, and hyperactivity or restlessness.

But some new information parents of ADHD children should know comes from a very recent research study conducted by the National Institute of Health confirming what we already know but  adding that it seems as if the biological imbalance is driven by slow development in the areas of the brain responsible for self regulation. They went on to say that their research also seems to suggest that the brain communication terminals in ADHD children are underdeveloped, or are slow to develop, compared to other children of the same age without ADHD.

This line of thinking raises concerns about the type of treatment which is the most appropriate. If in fact ADHD turns out to be a developmental issue then one could logically conclude that harsh prescription medications such as Ritalin might not be the best option since they simply temporarily rebalance brain chemical and don't have any long-term benefits.

In conclusion, when ADHD students get lost academically and are unable to catch up it sets up a serious situation which is likely to result in both short and long-term failure.  As difficult as it may seem parents should be cognoscente of this and try to stay one step ahead always keeping in mind that ADHD students who fall behind academically have an 80 percent chance of under achievement if allowed to go it on their own.
