Entertainment: Two Tattoo Machine tools – liner and shader

(Sun May 22nd, 2011, by jessica)

Aspiring tattoo artists need the right tools to establish a name in the ever growing industry of tattoo art. The pieces of equipment in one's possession can make or break the career of an artist especially if his clients are not satisfied with the end result. It is a must therefore to know the tools that work and acquire them one at a time. There are two different types of a Tattoo Machine that is a basic requirement in a tattoo shop – a tattoo liner and a tattoo shader.

A beginner may not know the differences between the two kinds of Tattoo Machine equipment but it is quite important to distinguish the two as there are disparities between the two. These may not be as obvious while looking at them but an artist will notice a significant difference when using a liner as a shader and vice versa.

Generally speaking, a Tattoo Machine that is equipped to work as a liner functions as just that – to make lines, outlines, or fills in small details or spaces in the tattoo design. On the other hand a shader Tattoo Machine fills in bigger gaps and basically gives the art its overall look. Black is normally the color used for a shader but it is also possible to use colors as seen in tattoos that feature more vibrant hues than the traditional black or variants of black.

Artists who use a liner Tattoo Machine has fewer needles to create a more precise and streamlined output. It holds a maximum of ten needles but the most common counts are strangely odd-numbered, from one to seven with five and seven needles in between. The needles are arranged in a circular manner so that when there are more needles, the outcome is a thicker line. With a shader Tattoo Machine, it is implied that it uses more needles to cover more space in one pass. The needles are arranged like that of the teeth of a comb to have a more convincing shading effect. This machine usually contains more than ten needles while four or six, seven and nine as the most common figurations.

Looking at the two kinds of Tattoo Machine, one might argue that they look exactly the same. At closer inspection the shader features a more angled position, if only slightly. This is so that the Tattoo Machine can employ a more effective technique at shading than if positioned a little straighter like that of the liner type.

These are just some considerations that an artist should look into before investing in the right Tattoo Machine. When in doubt, get the opinion of other more seasoned artists, read reviews, or better yet contact the company which sells these machines and inquire about them.
