Education: What to ecpect from a SIA training course

(Fri May 6th, 2011, by Brigette)

The days when it was enough for security guards to look tough and have a mean right hook are long past.

Now, a good security guard will use their negotiation skills to defuse a situation before it escalates to the point where force is required. Though, the willingness to use force is still a requirement.

If you are looking to train as a security guard make sure it is for the right reasons.

This isn't a role for someone who enjoys confrontation – rather, it is a role for someone who is good at avoiding confrontation. This isn't a role for someone who can't communicate, because a good security guard will be above all, a good communicator.

And finally, this isn't a role for someone who lacks an interest in people and the public good, because the ultimate role of a security guard is to protect the public.

If you can identify yourself in all the above, for all the right reasons, then perhaps you should consider undertaking SIA training. SIA training is the industry-approved qualification for security guards and leads to being granted the SIA licence.

Without an SIA licence you won't be recognised as a security guard and you won't be able to get work, so anyone who is serious about joining the industry should look into taking the course as soon as possible.
The course will cover everything you need to know. It will start with the basics of how to deal with emergencies, including fire, and some legal background. It will then move on to cover the practical aspects of the job, such as searching people, drugs awareness and post-incident paperwork.

Conflict management is a big part of any SIA training, and will focus on avoiding conflict and defusing situations. An important part of this is keeping yourself safe, so expect to learn about personal safety too. In the event of the failure of conflict avoidance, how and when and what types of physical intervention will be covered.
