| Education: Student Response Systems Help Pupils As Well As Teachers (Tue May 10th, 2011, by Phil Adams-Wright) |
There have been many technological advances with regards to the way that school pupils are taught these days but the most important thing is to ensure that their progress and development can be measured. Providing school children with information is one thing but if it is not being taken on board or being heeded there is very little point in continuing with the process.
This is why it is essential for teachers and educators to be able to measure the level of understanding of pupils and this is where student response systems can be very important. Without this form of checking mechanism, there is a risk that some students could slip behind and lead to panic and confusion when exams and other assessments roll around.
One of the best forms of student response system has to be the one that allows pupils to give their answers automatically. Whether the questions are multiple choices, true or false or even numerical, there is the option to use a reader or polling system to obtain each child's answers anonymously.
This is the best method to obtain the answers from each pupil because it ensures they are not being swayed by what other pupils may think. Peer pressure is something that is hugely important at school and teachers have to be aware that some pupils will provide an answer to fit in with their friends or to be seen to be cool.
There are many instances in schools of pupils knowing the answer but given incorrect answers so as to not look too bright in comparison with other pupils. Sadly there can be a stigma around intelligence in schools and many pupils will try to do what they can to disguise their level of intelligence from other pupils.
This is something that a good student response system is able to assist with and should give each pupil the confidence to answer with what they believe is correct. This should also give the teacher a greater level of confidence in their own skills and the fact that they are able to provide pupils with the correct information. It is important to ensure that all pupils have a reasonable understanding of the course and have followed lesson plans and guides.
A lot of modern technology that is used in classrooms is fairly expensive but this does not have to be the case with student response systems. Even schools on a moderate budget should be able to equip their children with technological products which help them provide the answers in this manner.
With technology in education helping students to learn and teachers to monitor progress you could easily use items like student response systems to effectively teach and make sure everyone is up to speed with the material being covered.
