Education: Student Response Systems Can Make Full Use of Computers

(Tue May 10th, 2011, by Craig Cole)

Each school is different and has their own budgetary issues to contend with but a greater number of schools are able to offer computer equipment to a wider range of pupils these days.  This means that some schools will have entire classrooms or perhaps even years of pupils who have access to computers.  The ability to link all these computers together in one network is entirely possible and provides a great deal of benefits in allowing clear communication between pupils and teacher.  In fact, the benefits allowed and offered by this form of communication can help to make a massive difference in the learning process and education plans for many school children.

Many schools use these computers for impromptu exams and tests to find out how much knowledge a pupil has about a certain subject.  There are end of year exams which are used to properly evaluate a pupil but it can be helpful for a teacher to carry out tests throughout the year on a class.  This gives them a better understanding of what lessons the pupils have understood and which lessons have not been taken in.  Regularly testing pupils throughout the school year can make a big difference in finding out problems and being able to provide remedies to issues that may arise.  Some pupils may need additional tuition but these problems can be highlighted at an early stage if regular testing takes place.

Computers linked to a main computer with each pupil's scores being recorded are one of the best ways of carrying out a student response system examination.  It doesn't matter what sort of exam it is, this set-up is perfectly capable of dealing with multiple choice, true or false, numerical or even essay style answers.  Exams based upon multiple choice or true or false questions can be answered and marked in a shorter time scale, allowing results to be provided at short notice but when it comes to marking and allocating tests to each pupil, a computer based exam is ideal.

Due to the fact that the number of computers in the home is rising sharply, most pupils will feel confident and adept when using computers.  This can be great for pupils who lack this confidence in their writing skills and allowing them to use a computer may allow them to feel more confident in their work.  Anything which can provide confidence to a pupil has to be worth considering when looking to get the best from them.

The use of computers and student response systems has increased a lot in recent years for the benefits mentioned in this article, being able to use this kind of technology in the classroom plays to the strengths of children and adults that are more proficient at using computers.
